Seven's First Birthday Mini-shoot #1

Here's the suitcase shoot! Im ridiculously amateur. I really don't know anything about photography, but I enjoy taking pictures! (possible dream job in the far future;) )

Dandelions

Dandelions are weeds. They must be sprayed with poisons, cut down with the lawn mower. They are unwanted. They are ugly. They need to be removed. Dandelions are a destructive plant. If they are not taken out, they will take over your perfect grass lawn and you will be over run. Society teaches us that.

But my daughter hasn't been taught this yet. Her eyes haven't been tainted with society's expectations of this "nuisance" plant. My daughter sees wonderful yellow flowers, the perfect flowers to pick for Mommy and Gramma. She thinks they are beautiful. She wants to see fields of them. She doesn't understand that they are weeds. They are supposed to be unwanted, cut down, destroyed, pull out, poisoned, and removed.

Generally, people especially hate when dandelions dry out and prepare for seed dispersal. But that is my sweet daughter's favourite part of this flower's life. She calls them "Wish Flowers". She picks the fluffiest, most beautiful, softest looking flower...takes a deep breath, makes a wish, and blows those seeds as far as she can. My sweet girl dreams big, too.

My daughter sees the beauty in things that many others do not see. She watches me when I get dressed, sees me fret over my extra skin, stretch marks, fat. She looks at me and tells me I am beautiful, and that she wants to look just like me when she gets big.

My daughter holds the hand of a little "black girl", and never noticed the colour of her skin. She is just so happy that she has a new friend to play with. She sees a little girl with a bright red birth mark on her face, and all she says is "Wow, Mom, look at that girls hair! She's just like Princess Ariel!"

My daughter doesn't follow societies rules and regulations. She sees the beauty, even when others don't. I hope she always stays that way. I hope she will always see the beauty. She shows me the good in things every day. I am always learning from her. And I am forever grateful.
